Zure ouwels (Sour Wafers)
Sour wafers, UFOs, wafers ... whatever name the candy is given everyone knows the delicacy consisting of an outer surface of candy paper with a filling of fresh sour powder.
Alternative to church wafers
The Antwerp wafer company Belgica is at the origin of the sour wafer. Around 1951, they were looking for an alternative to their church hosts or wafers for which orders were declining in the late 1940s.
The development of the confectionery was a combination of two older techniques:
the pharmaceutical 'cachets': boxes of wafer dough filled with powdered medicines
the sour pouches: sweets in the form of sour-sweet powder sold in small pouches with or without a stick or spoon. Although the sour wafers became an incredible success, production was only limited to two Belgian manufacturers namely Belgica and Confiserie Servais. Both companies were later taken over by Astra Sweets Turnhout, today the only remaining Belgian manufacturer.
